muktuk Conserving resources is a fundamental part of life at Muktuk Adventures and we are constantly experimenting with new ways to minimize our ecological footprint.

We are off the electricity grid so our energy needs are met by solar power with a diesel generator as our backup. Our goal is to limit the need for our diesel generator as much as possible. We installed a solar heated hot water system integrated with an outside wood burner.   It will significantly reduce our reliance on the diesel generator, reducing our fossil fuel use by up to 70%.

We try to conserve water as much as possible and we recycle all recyclable material and compost our organic, non-meat scraps. Our dogs eat any meat scraps as treats.  We also manage an organic greenhouse which supplies us with home-grown vegetables and herbs.

Yukon Bird Club logo

The Yukon Bird Club encourages birders to use less fossil fuels when they are birding, by walking, cycling, riding the bus or carpooling.

The Bird Club encourages sharing of bird identification books especially for international birding and purchase bird-related books and donates them to the library.

Members of the Yukon Bird Club will go on a bicycling and walking outing in the Whitehorse area on Earth Day to look for early spring migrants.

The Yukon Bird Club challenges other non profit societies to vie for the Bluebird Cup!  The “Bluebird “Cup” ( actually a framed photograph by Ken Quong) will be given to the society which  which raises the most money for bird conservation in this year’s Birdathon. The 26th Annual Yukon Birdathon will take place on May 28/29, 2010. For more information, visit the Yukon Bird Club website.

minimum purchase. Bearpaw Music & Gifts challenges other retail businesses to join them in making the switch to reusable bags.

cabinfever Among the numerous environmental commitments of Cabin Fever Adventures, in 2010 we will implement the use of portable aluminium latrines, making us the first Yukon wilderness company to switch to a pack-out of human waste policy on popular river corridors.

Being “green” is not just about having environmentally sound operating procedures, it is also about having positive socio-economic impacts for your community.  We believe healthy communities are better able to safeguard their environments.  Cabin Fever Adventures is making considerable efforts to promote greater involvement of First Nation people in wilderness tourism by running training programs and by actively seeking partnerships with First Nations.

Furthermore, we are providing a free-of-charge scholarship position in our “Wild Child” environmental leadership camp for summer 2010.  This camp is designed to promote environmental awareness and stewardship among Yukon’s youth.

Cabin Fever Adventures challenges others Yukon wilderness tourism companies to carbon offset their transportation emissions and help make the Yukon a leader in sustainable tourism.

To see the Cabin Fever Adventures commitment to the Earth Day Challenge, check out their Earth Day Challenge Registration Form.

At al-Khemedia Studios, we believe natural beauty is ours to steward.   Whenever possible we provide files through paperless digital mediums, and when prints are required, were possible we use recycled or renewable paper products, and non-toxic inks.

However, as there are still many products that we cannot source from environmentally responsible suppliers, a portion of all proceeds is donated to scientific research focused on preserving and protecting our northern landscapes.

al-Khemedia Studios challenges all of the photographers in Whitehorse to investigate responsible printing options.

aromaborealis

Did you know that Aroma Borealis recycles over 95% of waste? We reduce, reuse, recycle and compost!

By creating all natural, earth-safe body care products in small batches Aroma Borealis is trying to lower our impact on the earth and our carbon footprint.

Using local hand made, all natural Aroma Borealis products keeps harmful chemical ingredients, synthetic preservatives, fragrances and colors out of our bodies and out of the local environment! Most mainstream body care products contain toxic ingredients these pollute the planet and the people who live on it, all of us!!!

Using bulk organic herbs reduced the use of chemical pesticides used in many farming practices. We wild harvest botanicals from the Yukon and buy bulk herbs from organic farmers and suppliers only in Canada. Bulk herbs and teas also reduce packaging and use of large machinery that is needed to produce tea bags.

When considering packaging, we try to be minimalistic; Over-packaging has a huge impact on the environment.

When considering packaging we have to weigh out the options. We try to use glass containers as much as possible but we still rely on some plastic containers (but they are reusable and recyclable) for shipping purposes. Because our products don’t have weird chemical preservative they freeze and break in the winter when shipping to web buyers. This is ongoing for us.

naturetoursNature Tours of Yukon is encouraging our guides and all our guests to choose supplies and food for their hiking and canoeing trips wisely, i.e. avoid bringing glass, metal and plastic disposable containers in the backcountry and take re-usable containers and bags instead, plan ahead to prepare food economically (less fuel and less waste) and avoid large campfires.

Furthermore, we challenge them to pack out more than they pack in leaving trails and camps clean, and helping to take out other people’s garbage. Upon return we collect all garbage and recycle as much as possible.
